About Soccer

Modern soccer goes back to 1848 when official rules were first drawn up in Cambridge University. Later in the century a national board certified rules and those rules and the game spread all over the world.

The object of the game is to score goals by getting the ball into your opponent’s goal (two posts set 8 yards apart linked by a bar set 8 feet high with a net suspended behind it). The maneuvering of the ball across the field by a team must be done without touching the ball with arms or legs, so the ball moves by being kicked down field normally. A soccer game has 2 periods of play, each 45 minutes, with a 15-minute break in between. The game (normally) ends at the end of the second period, even if the score it tied.

The only place in the world where soccer is not a major sport is North America. Interestingly, the closest equivalent game to soccer by rules and style is hockey, which is very popular in Canada and the U.S. Soccer is so popular, that even the poorest and most rural locations find a way to play it, using makeshift soccer materials.

Some famous soccer players are Pele – possibly the greatest player ever, he helped to popularize the sport internationally while playing in Brazil from 1956 to 1977; Cristiano Ronaldo – began his career in Portugal at the age of 8 and started playing professionally in 2001, in 2009 he was the highest paid player in the world; Diego Maradona – South America’s greatest player, Maradona from Argentina played in 4 World Cups, playing from 1976 to 1997; and David Beckham – while he is perhaps more famous for his looks and his wife, England’s’ Beckham is one of the highest paid players in the world, starting in 2010 he began his 17th year in professional soccer.
