Sodium

Sodium

Sodium, or salt, has been an important mineral during man's history. Salt is necessary for human life and is an essential seasoning for food.

About Sodium

Sodium (Na) is an element and is considered an alkali metal and has an atomic number of 11. Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is a chemical compound and is better known as table salt or the mineral halite. Sodium chloride is mined from the earth from vast deposits which were once seawater. One of the United States largest salt mines is Cargill Salt which is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Sodium Chloride is a necessary mineral needed for survival. It is in your blood, sweat and tears. The chloride in salt aids in digestion adding the chlorine to the hydrochloric acid found in your stomach. Excessive amounts of sodium chloride, however, can cause hypertension and heart disease. It is suggested that you use as little as 5 grams per day.

Salt plays an important role in history. The Erie Canal is often said to be the ditch that salt built. Others have said that the South lost the war because they had no salt which was controlled by the North and they were unable to purchase salt at any price. And even the French Revolution began in part due to a high tax placed on salt. History shows salt being used as money.
