South Beach Diet

South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is a book and diet plan developed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston and based on the glycemic index. The South Beach Diet also includes branded packaged, ready-to-heat meals by Kraft Foods called South Beach Living.

About South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet was originally developed to help prevent heart disease. The logic of the time among cardiologists in the 1980s was that low-fat diets would lower choloesterol and thus help prevent the onset of heart disease. Dr. Agastson agreed with this principle, but found that in practice patients would often be unable to stick with such a diet because it tended not to satisfy cravings and hunger, or would end up eating more, gaining weight, and increasing their risk for heart disease. From this, Agastson developed the South Beach Diet, a diet which would have the positive effect of decreasing heart disease while working in practice. Following its success among heart patients, word spread that it worked as a healthy and filling diet plan, fueling its popularity.

The South Beach Diet has three major principles. The first is exchange 'bad carbs' for 'good carbs.' Agastson identified 'bad carbs' as those heavily refined foods which spike the blood sugar and later contribute to greater feelings of hunger. Instead, 'good carbs' which are unprocessed, like vegetables and whole grains, would have enough carbohydrate to them to keep hunger down, while also introducing heart-healthy nutrition. The second principle is trade 'bad fats' for 'good fats' as well. Trans-fats are eliminated and saturated fats are greatly reduced while not all fats are reduced. The South Beach Diet recognizes that unsaturated fat and omega-3 fatty acids contribute to heart health, and so encourages those fats in the diet. The last principle regards eating habits which takes place in three stages, strictest at the beginning, which loosen over a period of days.
