About Speaker of House

The Speaker of the House is the title for the leader of the US House of Representatives. The Speaker is elected at the beginning of each term and is normally a senior member of the political party that holds the majority.

Besides presiding over the House, the Speaker is also 2nd in line for President. According to Constitutional rules of succession, if something happens to the President the Vice President takes over, and if something happens to the Vice President, the Speaker of the House becomes President.

The Speakers primary authority comes from setting the agenda for the House of Representatives, as the leader of both the House and the majority political party.

The Speaker also controls many administrative aspects of the House, for example one of Speaker John Boehners first duties was to set the legislative calendar for the House, creating a 4-day work week to allow Representatives to get back to their district for a 3-day weekend.
