Spiders

Spiders

Spiders are one of those creatures that most people prefer not to run across, yet these arthropods are an important part of nature. They are natural predators and help control the population of harmful insects. Spiders are generally harmless to humans, yet people have this almost instinctual fear of them. However, some cultures view the spider as a symbol of patience.

About Spiders

The few spiders that are harmful to humans rarely attack unless they feel threatened. Most of the time, their bite is similar to a bee sting. A black widow or recluse spider can be deadly, but the odds of getting bit are very low.

There are many different varieties of spiders, from the tiny Patu digua that has a body of 0.015 inches, up to the tarantula which has a body size of 3.5 inches with up to a 10 inch leg span. Most spiders are usually never even seen, as they are good at hiding in small places and blending into their surroundings waiting to catch some food.

Many spiders spin webs for both their home and as a way to catch food. They are able to produce the silk to make the webs, which is both lightweight and strong. There are several types of webs, including spiral orb, tangle, funnel, tubular, sheet, and dome. Most spiders are able to produce both sticky and non-sticky strands so they are able to move on the web without getting stuck in it themselves. Other spiders, like trapdoor spiders, do not build webs at all, but rather build a den like area under ground and pop out, surprising their prey.
