Stan Lee

Stan Lee

Stan Lee is a legendary comic writer and artist, best known for creating the Marvel superheros Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, and many others. Stan Lee also is known for his frequent cameos in movies based on his characters.

About Stan Lee

Known for: Comic book writer, editor, producer, publisher, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

Stan Lee co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Avengers, Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and many other famous comic book characters. Stan distinguished himself from other comic artists by creating flawed, human characters. His heroes could have bad tempers, melancholy fits, vanity, greed, etc. They bickered amongst themselves, worried about paying their bills and impressing girlfriends, and even were sometimes physically ill. Before him, most superheroes were perfect people with no serious, lasting problems.

Lee also introduced the practice of including credits on each comic, naming not just the writer and penciller but also the inker and letterer. In addition, Lee used sophisticated vocabulary for the stories' dialogue to encourage readers to learn new words. Lee has justified this by saying, If a kid has to go to a dictionary, that's not the worst thing that could happen.

In later years, Lee became the public face for Marvel Comics. He made appearances at comic book conventions around America, lecturing at colleges and participating in panel discussions. In the 2000s, Lee did some work for DC Comics, in which Lee reimagined the DC superheroes Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash, humanizing them and giving them even more depth. And of course many of Stan's heroes have found their way onto the big screen including the X-Men, the Hulk, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and Iron Man.
