About Star Wars

The 'Star Wars' Franchise:
'Star Wars' is an American film franchise created by writer, director, and producer George Lucas in the early 1970s. The first film, 'Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope' (released to theaters simply as 'Star Wars'), opened to audiences in 1977. The world went immediately wild for the action-packed, story-driven space opera whose pioneering special effects and iconic characters, including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2 and Darth Vader, won over audiences in droves. The reception of 'Star Wars' was so great that a trilogy of three films were released in just a 9-year span: 'Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope' (1977), 'Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back' (1980), and 'Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi' (1983).

Sixteen years later George Lucas returned to 'Star Wars,' delivering a new prequel trilogy of films revealing the development of Darth Vader, again in a 9-year span: 'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace' (1999), 'Star Wars Episode II: The Clone Wars' (2002), and 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith' (2005).

Since its release in 1977, the 'Star Wars' franchise has made over $4 billion in theaters, placing third in the list of most successful film franchises of all-time just behind the 'Harry Potter' and 'James Bond' series.
