About Starbucks

Founded: 1971 in Seattle, Washington, by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl & Gordon Bowker.

Type of chain: Coffeehouse

Starbucks is known worldwide as the leading provider for high quality coffee drinks and is a multi-billion-dollar/year company that employs over 120,000 people. With over 17,000 stores (11,000 + of which are in the United States) in 55 countries, Starbucks has proven itself to be the "queen" of the coffee service industry.

The first Starbucks was opened in 1971 by three co-founders and was a small, true coffeehouse, and by 1987 the company began to expand to other regions of the country outside of Washington. By the 1990's, a new Starbucks was being opened every business day and this practice trickled into the 2000's. As Starbucks began to expand, so did its drink menu; the company introduced Tazo Tea and other drink variations, such as Frappuccinos. Most stores are equipped with WiFi and offer free iTunes songs downloads too, making it one of the go-to hang out places.

Soon, Starbucks began dominating the market, but the decline of the economy within the last few years has caused the company to close down several stores and the elimination of 7,000 plus jobs.

Starbucks store hours vary by location. Typically, Starbucks locations open between 5:00 and 6:00 AM in the morning, and close between 9:00 and 11:00 PM at night.
