About Steve Carell

Known for: Playing the quirky Michael Scott on the hit TV series, 'The Office', for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series.

Before The Office, he was famous as a correspondent for 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart' (1999-2004). He has been in several Hollywood movies such as 'Anchorman', 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin', 'Little Miss Sunshine', 'Evan Almighty', 'Dan in Real Life', and 'Get Smart'. He also lent his voice in the animated films 'Over the Hedge', 'Horton Hears a Who!', and 'Despicable Me'. His most recent film is 'Date Night', a comedic film co-starring Tina Fey. He is an American actor, comedian, producer, and writer.

Carell was born into a family of six, and he was the youngest of four boys. His mother, Harriet, was a psychiatric nurse, and his father, Edwin, was an electrical engineer. He attended Denison University in Ohio, and wanted to be a radio DJ after he graduated. Instead, he became a mail carrier, a job that didn't last very long because his boss flat out told him that he wasn't a good mail carrier! Carell thought about becoming a lawyer, but never submitted his application because he couldn't answer the question: Why do you want to become a lawyer?

Before he hit it big, Carell acted in a traveling children's theater. It wasn't until 1999, after a series of small appearances and gigs in television, that he really made a mark for himself as a correspondent for 'The Daily Show with John Stewart'. Audiences loved him and he became a recognizable face in mainstream TV. He held the gig until 2005 when NBC offered him the role of Michael Scott on a new TV show, 'The Office'. The show has become a mega-success and Carell has been praised for his comedic performance. He has won a Golden Globe award, been nominated for four Emmy Awards, and has won two Writers' Guild of America Awards.

Carell, who is Catholic, is married to Nancy Carell, an actress on 'Saturday Night Live'. They have two children, Elisabeth Anne Annie (born May 25, 2001) and John Johnny (born June 2004). The family resides in Massachusetts.
