Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs was the co-founder and former CEO of Apple Inc. Steven Paul Jobs, born February 24, 1955 in San Francisco, CA, was known for his marketing and design genius. Jobs also co-founded Pixar Animation Studios (previously The Graphics Group) and served as CEO until 2006 when Disney acquired Pixar. After the acquisition of Pixar, Steve joined Disney's board of directors. Mr. Jobs, after transforming computers and culture in major ways, died on October 5, 2011, at the age of 56, after nearly ten years of illness, including a bout of pancreatic cancer.

About Steve Jobs

Jobs was a major innovator and brilliant marketer who is known for being both a tech creator and a tech killer. In April 2010 Jobs turned his gaze to Flash, and he published a long open letter about how the technology is no longer necessary and is hurting the web. To quote from his conclusions:

Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.

The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games.

New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind.

Apple and NeXT

In 1976, Jobs co-founded Apple with his friend Steve Wozniak. In 1980 Jobs took Apple public and brought on John Sculley (previously CEO of PepsiCo) as CEO in 1984. In 1985 after a falling out with Sculley, the board decided to oust Jobs from his position over the Macintosh division.

Soon after being ousted from Apple, Jobs went on to found NeXT (1986) and launch the NeXT Computer. Eventually NeXT ended up switching to developing only software after not seeing many sales of their NeXT machines. In 1996 NeXT was purchased by Apple for $429 million.

Pixar Animation Studio

In 1986, Steve Jobs co-founded Pixar and became the CEO after purchasing The Graphics Group from Lucasfilms. Pixar later partnered with Disney to start producing computer-animated films with the first being Toy Story in 1995. In 2006, Disney announced that it was acquiring Pixar for $7.4 billion worth of stock. Jobs then went on to join the board of directors and become the largest shareholder of Disney stock with 7%.

Steve Jobs’s Health

In 2004 Steve Jobs announced that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and in July 2004 Jobs underwent surgery to remove the tumor. In 2009 Jobs underwent a liver transplant in Memphis, TN which would prepare him to return to Apple after a 6 month leave of absence.

Stepping Down

On August 24, 2011, Steve Jobs released a press statement saying he'd no longer be CEO of Apple, Inc and would be passing the job to Tim Cook, the Chief Operations Officer.
