Stress

Stress

Stress can be normal or it can grow to dominate our emotions and even cause sickness. If you are living with constant stress try to find out the cause and try to change it instead of just addressing the symptoms. Seek help if you need it!

About Stress

Stress is defined as a condition typically characterized by symptoms of mental and physical tension or strain, as depression or hypertension, which can result from a reaction to a situation in which a person feels threatened, pressured, etc. Synonyms for stress include anxiety, nervousness, fearfulness, apprehensiveness, impatience, fear, tenseness, or restlessness. Stress is our reaction to stressors. A stressor is defined as any stimulus that produces stress. Stressors can include loss of job, change of job or school or moving to a new town, a death or illness in the family, fear, and even something good can cause stress because you still need to adapt to that change. Eustress is stress that is good for you. It keeps you excited about life and has no bad effects on your body.

Symptoms of stress affect your body, your thoughts and feelings and your behavior. Stress can affect your body by causing headaches, back pain, chest pain, upset stomach, heart palpitations and high blood pressure. When stress affects your mind, or thoughts and feelings it causes forgetfulness, anxiety, restlessness, worrying, fear, depression, anger or sadness to name a few. Your behavior can be affected by stress causing you to overeat, undereat, abuse drugs or alcohol, have crying spells, increase in your smoking and withdraw socially.

When experiencing overwhelming stress symptoms it is important to fix the problem. Stress management comes in many forms including physical exercise, meditation, yoga, and sometimes medication. You also need to examine what is the cause of the stress and make changes to alter these stressors.

Unfortunately stress is a part of daily life and the most you can do is deal with it, remove it or think it away, take charge of it before it takes charge of you. Seek professional help if necessary and remember Don’t sweat the small stuff… and its all small stuff. as so eloquently put by Richard Carlson, PH. D. in his book of the same name.
