Target

Target

Target Corporation (Target) is an American retailing company founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1902 as the Dayton Dry Goods Company. In 1962, the company opened its first Target store in nearby Roseville. Target grew and eventually became the largest division of Dayton Hudson Corporation, culminating in the company changing its name to Target Corporation in 2000. By May 2010, the company had opened stores in every state except Vermont, operating as Target or SuperTarget.

About Target

There are many different types of Target Stores besides the regular general merchandise stores, including Target Greatland, Super Target and urban stores.

Target Greatland stores first started popping up around the United States about 1990. Target Greatland's are bigger than the general merchandise Target stores. Target Greatland's carry more general merchandise and have a limited grocery section, primarily consisting of non-perishable goods and a few selected perishable items. Some of the prominent features include multiple entrances and an expanded cafe, which may have a Taco Bell, a Pizza-Hut Express or a Starbucks. Target Greatlands have been phased out in recent years in favor of more general merchandise stores.

Super Targets are a type of store called a hypermarket. Super Targets not only have all the regular merchandise found at every other Target store, but also feature a full grocery with fresh produce, a bakery and a deli. They also have a cafe that may have a Taco Bell, a Pizza-Hut Express or a Starbucks as well as a Target Optical and a few stores may also have a Target Clinic. Target Stores are not open 24 hours.

Besides the big box stores in the suburbs, Target also has locations in urban areas where building the huge stores just is not cost effective. This leads to unique individual stores with their own personalities. Some cities with urban Targets include Seattle, Annapolis, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Diego, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans, and Minneapolis .
