Teen Pregnancy

Teen Pregnancy

Teen pregnancy is abundant in America. The United States has the most teen pregnancies of any other developed country in the world. The CDC reports that in 2006 435,436 babies were born to mothers from 15-19 years old in the U.S. Nearly 2/3 of these pregnancies were unintended.

About Teen Pregnancy

Becoming a mom while a teen can cause many problems for your health and your future. Most pregnant teens drop out of high school and are unable to support themselves or their child. Teen moms usually end up single and have no teenage life. You have added responsibilities and need to care 24/7 for another human being.

Abstaining from any sexual activity is the only way to guarantee that you will not become pregnant. However that is not usually the case so protection is the next step. Use protection at all times. It is not 100% guaranteed but your chances of not becoming pregnant are greatly increased.

As a parent, you should talk to your teens about sex. Don’t sit back and think they will learn about it from their peers, as most are misinformed. As a parent it is your duty to educate your child, son or daughter, and help prevent teen pregnancy.

There are many organizations available to teens, with or without parental consent. They will help them with birth control and education. They will even help if a teen becomes pregnant. These organizations are here to help and let you know that you are not alone and don’t have to go through this by yourself.

Some organizations focused on teen health, pregnancy and prevention are Planned Parenthood: 1-800-230-PLAN and American Pregnancy Helpline: 1-866-942-6466. You may also find local agencies available to you.
