About The Lord of the Rings

'The Lord of the Rings' is a fantasy trilogy by British author J.R.R. Tolkien. The books, completed in 1949, are among the most read and most influential books of the entire twentieth century, having inspired an entire genre of fantasy fiction, animated films, video and board games, and an award winning series of films. In December of 2001, 2002, and 2003, New Line Cinema released three films based on the books, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’, ‘The Two Towers’, and ‘The Return of the King’. The award winning films were shot in New Zealand and were created by New Zealand director Peter Jackson.

J.R.R. Tolkien was a British scholar of philology (the study of language and literature) and he specialized in the ancient languages of Europe and the creation and hero stories that used them. It has been suggested that he wrote ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and their companion pieces, ‘The Silmarillion’ and ‘The Hobbit’ as a fictional prehistory of the British Isles.

The first book, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ follows the adventures of Frodo Baggins and his quest to destroy a dangerous ring and the friends who gather to help him accomplish that goal. In the second book, ‘The Two Towers’ the armies of evil gather as Frodo continues his quest and his friends alert and guide the forces of good. In the final book, ‘The Return of the King’, Frodo faces his final test while his friends and the armies of good face epic battles.

Besides its impact on fantasy writing, The Lord of the Rings greatly influenced popular musicians as diverse as Led Zeppelin, Rush, Styx, Black Sabbath, and Enya. It had a huge impact on the creation of the game, ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ which in turn influenced an entire genre of role playing and video games. The book has been translated into dozens of languages, and has been consistently listed as one of the most read books in the world since it’s creation.
