Tiger Woods is of major importance in PGA ratings, and hisabsence has meant a huge reduction in Golf viewers:

* 'Combined ratings for Sunday coverage on broadcast TV of this year's first three Tour events are down almost 38 percent from two years ago when Woods was not absent due to injury, according to Nielsen Co.'
* 'Previous studies showed TV ratings slumped almost 50 percent when Woods missed time for surgery.'

A recent Neilson Report quantified the 'Tiger Effect' and how Golf needs him: Neilson Report

Tiger mentioned during his Feb. 19, 2010 press conference that he would likely return to golf, but was not sure when that would happen.

It is clear that the PGA is suffering in the Tiger-free era. TV Ratings demonstrates the PGA's need to get Tiger back. The slumping ratings aren't something unexpected to the PGA. In 2008-2009 while Tiger was rehabbing his knee, Tiger-free tournaments had their TV ratings essentially sliced in half(47%), according to Neilson. I am sure the PGA is drooling over the record-breaking ratings numbers they are likely to get when Tiger does come back.

However, it's not just the PGA that wants him back, so do his fellow players. Whether they like him or hate him personally, tournament purses are affected by Tiger. Since Tiger arrived on the tour, event purses are up 200%(1997-2007). Any extended period of time without Tiger and tournament purses could dive as the slumping TV ratings sink in and sponsors pull tighter on their purse strings due to less exposure for their events. The PGA, players, sponsors, and Tiger ultimately don't want that.
