About Tom Hanks

Known for: Respected American actor, writer, producer and director, whose work ranges from comedy to tragedy

Tom Hanks has come a long way since he was a young comic actor. As a teen he lived with his single father and learned self-reliance. He has said in interviews that he was a geek, and acted in school plays while attending high school in Oakland, CA. He then studied theater at Chabot College and transferred to CSU, Sacramento.

He began in theater as an intern in the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, OH. He moved to NYC , acted in theater and got an agent, who found him a leading role in Bosom Buddies, playing the role of Kip Wilson. He moved to LA and worked for two seasons in Bosom Buddies, and his work was critically praised. Ron Howard found him and cast him in 1984's Splash, a huge hit that grossed over US$69 million.

By 1993 he established himself as a bankable leading man with the mega-hit romantic comedy 'Sleepless in Seattle', and his Academy Award-winning role as an AIDS sufferer who sues his employer ('Philadelphia'). In 1994 he again won the oscar for his role in Forrest Gump. His long line of successful movies include:
