Toyota is the world's largest automaker. Based in Japan, the company was an early adherent to TQM (total quality management), and set the quality standards that most automakers now adhere to. Toyota was a pioneer in developing a hybrid car, the Prius, that uses a combination of battery and gas power in a highly fuel-efficient car.

Toyota is a multi industry company manufacturing automobiles and robotics. Toyota also has a financial service division and is involved in biotechnology. The Toyota Motor Company is the most popular division employing 71,116 people in 2009. They are world’s largest automobile maker.

Toyota History

The company started as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works producing vehicles in 1933. The first cars produced were the A1 passenger car and the G1 in 1935. Toyota Motor Co. was established as an independent company in 1937.

Why is it called Toyota?

Toyota vehicles were originally sold under the name Toyoda after founder Kiichir? Toyoda. The company name was changed to Toyotabecause it took eight brush strokes to write in Japanese and was visually simpler. Toyoda means fertile rice paddies. Changing the name helped the company distance itself from old fashioned farming.

Toyota Gas Pedal Recall

In January 2010 Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles for sticking accelerator pedals. The recall affected certain models and a fix was issued free of charge for all affected vehicles. This recall was a separate issue from the improperly placed floor mats that can hold the gas pedal down. Toyota issued a recall on November 25, 2009 for this problem.

Toyota Product Line

Toyota currently offers 16 models in the US. The car lineup includes the following models: Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Camry, Prius, Venza, and Avalon. The truck lineup includes the Tundra and Tacoma. The SUV & Van lineup includes: Rav 4, FJ Cruiser, Highlander, 4Runner, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, and Sienna. The company also offers hybrid vehicles with the Prius, Camry Hybrid, and Highlander Hybrid.
