For almost 10 years the Toys''R''Us store on Times Square in New York City has been a top tourist destination with a 60-foot ferris wheel, a 20-foot animatronic T-Rex and a life-sized Barbie dollhouse. Plus it's the world's largest dedicated toy store.

About Toys R Us

Toys''R''Us, Inc. started in 1948 with the dream of one man, Charles Lazarus. Lazarus, who was quite the visionary, owned a baby furniture store in the Washington, D.C. area. Lazarus oversaw every aspect of the store, even delivering baby furniture to the homes of his customers.

Since Lazarus was a man who was always looking for ways to satisfy his customers' needs and expand his product base, he started to introduce toys for children, as well as infant products. Lazarus quickly learned that unlike furniture, the toy business was booming and constantly changing. This factor, along with Lazarus's dedication to customer service, allowed him to capitalize on the industry and keep customers coming back.

Nearly ten years later, Lazarus adopted a supermarket style for his store that allowed customers to browse the multitude of products and pay at a checkout stand. After opening his second store, he came up with the name Toys''R''Us with the ''R'' spelled backwards to draw attention to the brand.

Through the innovative efforts of Lazarus, Toys''R''Us, Inc. became a public company that was highly recognized for its mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe and the infamous jingle, ''I Don't Want to Grow Up, I'm a Toys''R''Us Kid.''

In the early 1980's, Toys''R''Us, Inc. saw an extensive market expansion as the company looked to diversify its product line. In 1983, the company got into children's clothing with the first Kids''R''Us stores located in New Jersey and New York. The company later added a clothing line to Toys''R''Us, as well as a store specializing in baby products called ''Babies''R''Us.

In 1984, Toys''R''Us, Inc. branched out internationally, with its first stores in Canada and Singapore.

Since that time, Toys''R''Us, Inc. has continued to broaden its portfolio, both in retail stores and online. In February of 2009, the company acquired several online retail sites, including eToys.com, Toys.com and babyuniverse.com, not to mention the already existing web sites of Toysrus.com and Babiesrus.com. In May of 2009, Toys''R''Us, Inc. took over the rights to operate FAO Schwarz, an iconic toy company with an extensive history. With the combination of retail stores and web sites, Toys''R''Us, Inc. has become a powerhouse when it comes to baby, children and kid products of all varieties.
