Trimester

Trimester

A trimester a three-month division of the nine-month long period of pregnancy. Different changes and occurrences take place in each trimester.

About Trimester

A trimester is defined as a period or term consisting of three months. A pregnancy, which is nine months long, is broken up into three trimesters.

First Trimester
The first trimester of a pregnancy is 12 weeks long. It begins on the day of the woman’s last menstrual period, even though the pregnancy technically has not begun yet. During the first trimester, fertilization occurs, implantation takes place and the fetus begins to grow. During this time the mother may experience morning sickness, fatigue, mood swings, frequent urination and breast tenderness. By the end of the first trimester the baby is about 2.5 inches long and has arms, legs, facial features and internal organs.

Second Trimester
The second trimester is weeks 13 through 27. During this time, most women begin to see morning sickness subside, as well as some of the other uncomfortable symptoms. Energy is often restored. During the second trimester, the baby begins to develop bones, and fat begins to accumulate under its skin. The gender of the baby can now be determined by ultrasound. Hearing has developed, fingerprints and footprints are formed, and hair begins to grow. The baby will be about nine inches long and weigh about two pounds.

Third Trimester
The third trimester is weeks 28 through 40 and marks the final stage of pregnancy. In the last trimester, the woman puts on weight more rapidly as the baby begins to grow at a faster rate. The woman may begin to experience backaches and shortness of breath as the belly grows larger and the baby takes up more space. Frequent urination returns, and vaginal discharge may appear. Swelling of the arms, legs, hands, feet and face may occur. The baby completes its development during the third trimester. Between 37 and 40 weeks, the baby will drop low into the uterus to prepare for birth.
