Twitter is a social "microblogging" phenomenon that's taken the world by storm. About Twitter

Twitter was founded from an idea by Jack Dorsey when he worked at a podcasting company called Odeo, Inc. He had the idea to start a service that uses SMS to communicate with small groups. The original product name was Twttr. When the service launched in 2006, it was only available for Odeo employees. Twitter became available to the public later in 2006, and then eventually became its own company outside of Odeo in April of 2007.

In February of 2007, Dorsey wrote, ''One could change the world with one hundred and forty characters.'' Twitter gained popularity during South by Southwest in 2007, when usage went from 20,000 tweets per day to 60,000 tweets per day. Attendees of the conference could keep in touch with each other using the service and Twitter won the festival's Web Award prize.

A tweet on twitter is a text post made up of 140 characters or less. A tweet can also include a photo, video, link to a website or other media content. Users can subscribe to ''follow'' other users to read what others are tweeting. Twitter can be accessed on the Twitter website, mobile applications or through SMS. As of September 2010, Twitter has a registered 175 million users that write an average of 95 million tweets per day. By July 2011, the total jumped to a staggering 200 million tweets per day.
