About UFC

The Ultimate Fighter Championship (UFC) was created in 1993 and is regarded as the first professional organization for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). The history dates back to the Olympic Games in Athens and continues to about 80 years ago when a couple of guys in Brazil started holding fights. What links these fights to the UFC of today is the Vale Tudo style in which they fought; Vale Tudo refers to anything goes. From these Vale Tudo fights came a local interest that has since sparked a pop culture phenomenon.

The idea behind the UFC of today is to bring the athletes from various fighting disciplines together on one stage and pit them against each other in a Vale Tudo style. Every few weeks they have events, such as UFC 111. The disciplines involved in the UFC are: Boxing, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Jiu-Jutsu, Judo, karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and Wrestling.

All fighters wear kickboxing shorts, and 4-6 ounce that are designed to protect the hand but not give any weight advantage or improved striking surface. Fighters can win in a variety of ways that range from: submission through word of mouth or a physical gesture, technical knockout (referee stoppage), decision via scorecard, technical draw, disqualification, forfeit, and no contest.

Since the creation of the sport, UFC has gone from a backyard brawl organization, to a multi-million dollar organization with clothing lines and video games to a reality television series known as The Ultimate Fighter. In which 16 up and coming fighters are split into two teams that are coached by UFC Fighters. Where contestants live and train together and fight on a weekly basis, with the loser of those fights being sent home and the eventual Champion winning a UFC contract.
