About Unicorns

The unicorn is a legendary creature that looks like a white horse with the addition of a white spiraling horn coming from its forehead. It is often seen as a magical, good creature that represents peace, tranquility, unity, love and beauty. It is shown as a graceful creature, admired by many.

Originally, the unicorn was shown as having the body of a white horse, the beard of a billy goat, cloven hooves and the tail of a lion with the spiraling horn coming from its head. It wasn’t until the middle ages that the image we see today was used.

In medieval times, the horn of the unicorn was thought to have medicinal value. It was believed that the horn would protect a person from disease. If the horn was fashioned into a cup, it would protect the drinker from poisons that may have been added to the drink. In India it was used to avoid assassination. It was believed later that the horns were actually narwhal horns sold under the pretense that they had come from the body of a unicorn.

In the Hebrew Bible, the animal re’em is mentioned many times. In some translations, the unicorn is used as the translation of re’em. God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of a unicorn. (Numbers 23:22) In the American translations the re’em is translated to be a wild ox.

Today, unicorns are seen as beautiful mythological creatures. They are often used in movies and books and are many times portrayed as magical. In the book and movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ (2001) the unicorn’s blood has the ability to keep a person who is near death alive.

In the movie Legend’ (19985) Jack and Lily have to save the unicorns that are being destroyed by the evil Lord of Darkness. The unicorns hold the power of light and removing the horns of all the unicorns will bring eternal darkness.
