USPS

USPS

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a government agency that was created in order to provide mail service within the United States. Formerly called the Post Office or U.S. Mail,, it is now frequently called the Postal Service or officially the U.S. Postal Service. Formed in 1971, the USPS remains one of the few government agencies that is strictly authorized under the United States Constitution.

About USPS

The beginnings of the USPS originated back to the days of Benjamin Franklin through the Second Contintental Congress in 1775, which later became the Post Office Department in 1792. It was not until 1971 that the USPS was transformed into what is it today, under the Postal Reconstruction Act, making it officially an independent organization. Since its restructuring, the USPS has not directly benefitted from any money from taxpayers save a few expenses related to disabled and overseas citizens.

Recently, the USPS has started accepting loans from the U.S.Treasury to decrease its deficits, especially given the increased usage of email and decrease in mail circulation. It is the second biggest U.S. employer, next to Walmart, employing approximately 596,000 people. Although it does have exclusive rights to any mailbox labeled U.S. Mail, the USPS is still forced to compete again private delivery companies such as FedEx and the United Postal Service (UPS).
