Walmart is the largest retailer on the planet, offering some of the lowest prices you can find anywhere. Walmart opened its first store in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. By the end of the 1970s, Walmart had expanded to 276 stores in 11 states. The Walmart Supercenter we have come to know today began showing up around 1988. The brand went international in 1991 when they opened a Sam's Club store in Mexico City. Walmart has come a long way since 1962.

About Walmart

Sam Walton, the founder and first CEO, opened the first Walmart in 1962. Walmart expanded rapidly, opening 20 stores within the Arkansas area and managed to net over $12M in sales in the first five years alone.

As time went on, Walmart's reputation grew among the American population. Many people viewed the chain as a value priced store, offering high quality goods at an affordable price.

Walmart's leadership in the discount segment allowed it to grow rapidly throughout the years and by its 25th anniversary in 1987, the highly successful chain had over 1,100 stores and over 200,000 associates.

Walmart soon learned that they could grow to be a multi-national company and offer their low price and community focused philosophy to other parts of the world. Currently, there are over 4,000 stores with 660,000+ associates in 15 foreign countries.
