War

War

As war has become more technologically advanced, it paradoxically has become less effective as a means of solving human conflict. War has largely become a contest between highly equipped armies and small bands of guerrillas. The large armies often find themselves unable to 'win' a war.

About War

Human conflict is a common and largely beneficial thing - people come across new ideas or people or places and after a bit of a mess they learn and grow from it. When human conflict gets organized and violent, they call it war - and then the beneficial thing usually gets lost.

The history of war is largely a history of civilization. When people who grew their own food first built cities, they became a target of those neighbors who wanted that food. Foot soldiers gave way to cavalry; cavalry then gave way to armored motorized vehicles on the ground, in the air, and in the ocean.

In Western civilization, the wars won by Alexander the Great, Caesar, Napoleon, Cortez, and Washington directly created modern European and North and South American civilizations. In the East, the campaigns of Saladin, Khalid ibn Walid, and Genghis and Kublai Khan are just as responsible for the modern Middle East and Asia.

In modern times, World War I and World War II brought nearly every country in the world into conflict with each other. As human populations increased and came into more violent conflict, the casualty levels reached horrific proportions. With the advent of automatic weapons, armored vehicles, chemical weapons, and finally nuclear weapons, modern warfare reached a point where whole nations, and even the planet itself were potential casualties of armed conflict.

War has been described as the stupidest possible way to resolve a disagreement. While war has been responsible for many technological advances, unlike other forms of conflict, war rarely helps humanity grow as a species.
