About Washington

Washington is a state in the northernmost corner of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is bordered by Canada to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, Oregon to the south and Idaho to the east. Western Washington experiences a oceanic climate while eastern Washington experiences one that is semi-arid. The average temperature in the western side of the state is 51 °F. Washington is home to Mount St. Helens, an active volcano that erupted in 1980. Around the volcano are several visitor centers where people can learn how the volcano was formed, the events leading up to its eruption, the aftermath of the eruption and how the surrounding area changed post-eruption. Another great place to visit is the Hoh Rainforest, one of the few temperate rainforests within the United States.

Visitors can tour the rainforest by foot by one of its many trails or head to the water in a kayak to see its many wonders. Twilight fans flock to the state of Washington to visit the location mentioned in Stephanie Meyers popular vampire book series. The cities of Forks, Port Angeles and the reservation La Push play host to the Twi-hards with a celebration mimicking some of the events that occur in the books.

Washington was granted statehood on November 11, 1889. It was the 42nd state to be admitted to the Union. Its nickname is The Evergreen State which is reference to its abundance of evergreen trees and how the frequent rains keep everything lush and green.
