West Virginia

West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the , Ohio to the northwest, and Pennsylvania and Maryland to the northeast and east, respectively. The capital and largest city is Charleston.

About West Virginia

The state is noted for its mountains and diverse topography, its historically significant logging and coal mining industries, and its political and labor history. West Virginia is located in the Appalachian Mountain range, for this reason it is nicknamed The Mountain State and it is also partially the reason why its motto is Mountaineers are always free.

The climate of West Virginia is a humid subtropical climate in some of the lower elevations, primarily in the southwestern portion of the state (including Huntington and Charleston), along with parts of the Eastern Panhandle east of the Appalachians with hot, humid summers and milder winters. The rest of the state generally has a humid continental climate with warm to hot, humid summers and cool to cold winters, increasing in severity with elevation. Some southern highland areas also have a mountain temperate climate where winter temperatures are more moderate and summer temperatures are somewhat cooler.

West Virginia is the outdoor recreation capital of the east where you’ll find everything you need for a great outdoor adventure. From rafting and climbing in the spring and summer, to fall hunting and fishing, to winter snow tubing and skiing, West Virginia has it all. West Virginia has 12 State Parks and forests to discover. There are also numerous museums, coal mines and aviaries to explore.

West Virginia’s agriculture is known for its cattle, dairy products, poultry and apples. Its industry is popular for its chemical products, mining, primary metals, stone, clay, and glass products and tourism. West Virginia’s state bird is the Cardinal, the state flower is the Rhododendron, the state motto is Montani semper liberi which means Mountaineers are always free, and the state tree is the Sugar Maple.
