Whiplash

Whiplash

Whiplash is a non-medical term used to describe any damage to the soft tissue of the neck. It is caused by a sudden jolt that extends the neck beyond its normal range of motion. Whiplash can occur during an assault, car accidents, while playing sports, or a sudden fall.

About Whiplash

Treating whiplash is kind of like treating a broken toe, put some ice on it and try not to move it. It is recommended that you ice your neck for 20 minutes every hour, for the first several hours you are awake after your injury. It is important not to ice your neck directly because you could get frostbite. Place the ice in a towel, and then place it on your neck. Take acetaminophen for pain relief or ibuprofen for anti-inflammatory action.

If you have whiplash, it is probably a good idea to go see a doctor. The doctor will probably recommend some, if not all of the following treatments; neck massage, neck rest, bed rest, ice therapy, heat therapy, and better drugs than your over the counter pain relievers.

The doctor will also provide you with a soft cervical collar and a set of exercises to help restore your range of motion. They will also tell you to avoid any sudden movements of the head and neck to prevent further strain or injury.
