Windows 7

Windows 7

Windows 7 is a MicroSoft Windows operating system that was released three years after the release of MicroSoft's highly criticized Windows Vista. It sought to address many of the issues that users had with Vista, and was fairly successful in that effort.

About Windows 7

Windows 7 is an operating system from Microsoft released in July 2009.

Windows 7 Release
Windows 7 was released on July 2009 to manufacturing and reached product lines October 22, 2009. This came just three years after Microsoft’s previous OS, Windows Vista. Windows 7 incorporated a lot of features introduced by Vista and focused on being more compatible with applications and hardware that Vista was not compatible with.

Windows 7 Features
Windows 7 shows advances in touch and handwriting recognition along with improved performance on multi-core processors. The control panel features many new additions such as a Display Color Calibration Wizard, Gadgets, ClearType Text Tuner, Biometric Devices, and Credential Manager. The biggest change came to the taskbar with the ability to pin applications to the taskbar. This new addition resembles closely to Mac OSX.

Windows 7 Omitted Features
Microsoft removed several features that were included in Windows Vista. The classic start menu is gone, features for Windows Media Player and Microsoft Explorer were removed, and Windows Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Calendar, and Windows Mail were omitted. Similar capabilities are found in the free software line Windows Live Essentials available to download.

Windows 7 Reception
Compared to previous version Windows Vista, Window 7 was praised for its usability. Reviews averaged around 4 out of 5 stars and was noted as a big improvement. The operating system is available in Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions.
