Windows XP Release

Windows XP was released for retail sale on October 25, 2001. The OS version was a successor to Windows 2000 and Windows Me. Over 400 million copies were in use by January 2006. Direct OEM and retail sales of Windows XP ceased on June 30, 2008.

Windows XP Features

Windows XP brought many developments not found in previous OS versions. The start menu was expanded to two columns with installed applications on the left and user documents and system links on the right. My Computer and My Network Places were moved to the start menu from the desktop clearing up desktop clutter.

The Search feature was made more friendly and easy to use with the addition of Search Companions. The default companion is a puppy named Rover with Merlin the magician, Earl the surfer, and Courtney also available. You never have to worry about getting lonely while finding your children’s lost homework file!

Windows XP Editions

The two main editions are Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. The Home Edition was made for the everyday casual user while the Professional Edition was made for the workplace. A Windows XP Media Center Edition was introduced in 2002 and a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition was also released for tablet use.

Windows XP Reception

The streamlined performance of XP made XP one of the most popular versions in the Microsoft Operating System lineup. CNET rated it Excellent with 4 out of 5 stars. It was a worthwhile upgrade from Windows 95/98 and 2000.
