About Wonder Woman

Known for: Being a fictional character in the DC Universe of comics, a feminist symbol, and one of the three original DC Comics superheroes alongside Batman and Superman.

Wonder Woman is the daughter of the Amazon queen Hippolyta. As the Amazons are a race comprised solely of women, Wonder Woman was formed from the clay of the Amazonian island capitol, Themyscira, also known as Paradise Island, and endowed with superhuman abilities by the goddesses Aphrodite, Artemis, Demeter, Hestia, Pallas Athena, and the god of speed, Hermes. The new formed baby was named Diana after female USAF pilot Diana Trevor who had crashed and died at sea near the Amazon's island. Among the Amazons, Trevor was highly esteemed, and they greatly regarded her winged Air Force insignia and Star Spangled Banner. Blessed by the gods, Princess Diana excelled at every activity, surpassing the abilities of all the other Amazons.

Before the Amazons were even a people, the god Ares sought to interfere and wreak havoc in the world of men. The Amazons held a competition to select a champion to resist Ares, and to be sent to the world of men. Against her mother's wishes, Diana enrolled in the competition and proved herself the greatest of all the competitors. Based upon the treasured items which once belonged to Diana Trevor, a hero's outfit was formed resembling the insignia and American Flag.

In the world of men, Her secret identity is Diana Prince. She works as the Amazon ambassador to the United Nations in New York City, NY.

As Wonder Woman, she is equipped to fight all manner of evils, and to stand for peace and truth above all, with the Golden Lasso of Truth, which causes all those ensnared to speak the truth, and the Sandals of Hermes to travel speedily to her homeland. She wears a royal tiara and on her wrists golden shackles to remind her of the imprisonment of the Amazons by Herakles.

Her abilities include superhuman strength and speed, flight, the ability to communicate with animals, and the ability to withstand attacks from bullets and other weapons without harm. Wonder Woman is also the leading female member of the Justice League.

Wonder Woman first appeared in the December 1941 issue All Star Comics #8, created by William Moulton Marston, and is the only character besides Batman and Superman to have been regularly published from that era. She has also appeared in video games, books, and on television. Actress Lynda Carter made famous the part of Wonder Woman on the ABC TV series The New Original Wonder Woman which aired from 1975-1979. In the June 30, 2010 issue Wonder Woman #600, Wonder Woman's costume was redesigned, and she dawned pants for the first time in the superherione's history to give her a 21st century makeover. For decades her costume had resembled a one-piece swimsuit.

A full-length Wonder Woman movie is in the works, but has been long-troubled by production issues. In 2005, Silver Pictures hired writer Joss Whedon to write a script which never moved beyond an outline. In 2010, Warner Bros. stated that Wonder Woman is still in development. No writer, director, or leading actress have been named. There is currently no release date.

In February 2011, NBC announced that 'Friday Night Lights' star Adrianne Palicki will star in the Wonder Woman television series. Unlike previous adaptions, the writers will include all of Wonder Woman's iconic equipment including her cuffs, lasso, and her invisible plane.
