Wood Chuck

Wood Chuck

Woodchucks are also called ground hogs. They are small mammals that hibernate in the winter. Every year in Spring, the most famous woodchuck/groundhog, Punxsutawny Phil, emerges to foretell how many more weeks of winter we will have.

About Wood Chuck

A woodchuck is a mammal belonging to the marmot family. Also known as a groundhog, the woodchuck can be found all across North American lowlands. They are very common in northeastern and central United States and can often be seen along the roadways munching on the grasses that grow just on the other side of the breakdown lanes.

Woodchucks build their homes underground. They burrow down into the ground and create nests in which they can sleep and rear their young. Each burrow has two to five entrances for safety. The woodchuck needs to be able to escape from any predator that ventures into their home.

Like bears, to which they are no relation to, woodchucks hibernate in the winter. They dig their hibernation burrows below the frost line in order to keep the temperature above freezing. Before the winter months come they eat heavily putting on as much weight as possible to help sustain themselves throughout the cold season.

How much wood can a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood! The origins of this popular tongue twister are unknown but one thing is certain: A woodchuck doesn’t chuck wood at all! They do not use it for shelter; they have the ground for that. They don’t choose to eat it; they live off of grasses, berries and the occasional grubs and small insects. It is assumed the tongue twister was developed solely based upon word play.

Woodchucks are a man’s best friend (or sometimes worst enemy) come February 2nd. Every year on this date the groundhog (woodchuck) Punxsutawney Phil is pulled out of his burrow to help us determine whether or not spring will arrive early. If Phil sees his shadow we are in for six more weeks of winter.
