Work Permit

Work Permit

Work Permits are necessary for non-citizens of the United States or minors. The required forms can be found online or at a student's high school office.

About Work Permit

Work permit is a term for a legal authorization which allows a person to take employment. It most often refers to a person that is given permission to work in a country where they do not hold citizenship, but can also refer to naturalized minors who in some cases require a permit in order to legally work in compliance with Child Labor laws. Work permits are usually acquired through one's high school if they are a student. Students need only go to the school office and request the forms. They can also access these forms online at their state's Division of Labor and Industry page.

In the U.S., a teenager wishing to work must have a work permit. This is the result of child labor laws that tried to end the exploitation of underage workers. The laws differ by state. In New Jersey work permits are required for those age 14 and 15. In Massachusetts work permits are required for all minors until age 18. Other states require them for 16 and 17 year olds. Enforcement of these laws differs by state, so consult the state office in charge of these permits to make sure you are within the law.
