About World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is the most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) ever created. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, World of Warcraft has almost twelve million monthly subscriptions and is currently the world's most-subscribed MMORPG, holding the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscribers.

In World of Warcraft, or WoW, players create a character within a fantasy game world, traveling across the land, battling monsters, completing quests, and interacting with other players or other non-player characters (NPCs) in the game. When creating their character, players choose a realm or server to play in. Each realm is a duplicate of the game world. Having so many realms helps to spread out the players over many servers. One server wouldn't be able to handle twelve million players!

The realms fall into one of four categories depending on a person's playstyle. They can either be player versus player (PvP), where you can fight other players, or player versus enemy (PvE), where the gameplay is more focused on defeating monsters and completing quests. Roleplaying (RP) and roleplay-PvP (RP-PVP) realms are populated by players who love to get into their characters. Realms are also categorized by language, with in-game support in the language available. Players are free to create new characters on all realms, and even transfer characters between realms for a small fee.

To create a new character, players must choose between the opposing factions called the Alliance and the Horde. Characters from the opposing factions can not speak to each other; only members of the same faction can speak, email, group, and share guilds. The player selects the new character's race, such as Orcs or Trolls for the Horde or Humans or Dwarves for the Alliance. Players must also select the class for the character, with choices such as mages, rogues, priests and paladins to name a few.

As you gain levels, characters can learn various talents and skills, requiring the player to further define the abilities of that character. Professions such as tailoring, blacksmithing, and engineering can be learned.

Characters progress through the game by completing quests or tasks which award them experience, money and sometimes let them gain access to skills or items. It is also through quests that much of the game's story is told, both through the quest's text and through scripted NPC actions. Quests usually involve killing a certain number of creatures, gathering resources, finding an object, speaking to NPCs, visiting specific locations, or delivering an item from one place to another.

World of Warcraft is subscription based, meaning that the player must pay a fee each month to continue play. Players can also buy time in three and six month periods or use gamecards bought in stores to keep their game account live. Blizzard also has the Blizzard Store, where players can buy game time, pets and even mounts such as the Celestial Steed.
