About World War One
World War I started in June of 1914 when Arch Duke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated. Austria retaliated against Serbia and suddenly the many different alliances between European states brought the continent to war. Because the European nations had colonies all over the world, the conflict spread world wide quickly.
By 1918 Europe was full of soldiers battling in trenches on multiple fronts for the British, French, German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian, and Ottoman Empires. Then the United States joined the conflict and soon after, a cease-fire was called. At wars end, in November of 1918, several of the empires fighting no longer had an empire.
Armistice Day, on November 11 each year, celebrates the end of World War I.
