About World War Two

World War II was fought from 1939 to 1945, and involved nearly every nation in the world. It pit the Axis Nations of Germany, Italy, and Japan against the Allied Nations. The Allied Nations started out as France, Poland, and the British, but after France and Poland fell to the Germans the Allies were led by the United States, the Soviet Union, and the British.

The start of the war is usually set as September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Germany, led by Adolph Hitler, planned to conquer all of Europe with the help of Italy. In Asia, Japan made alliances with German and Italy, and planned to conquer all of Asia, having already invaded Korea, and attacked China in 1937.

France and England were quickly drawn into the conflict, but by 1941, most of continental Europe had fallen to the Germans, with only England left standing against them to the west and the Soviet Union remaining neutral, to the east.

Then in 1941 the war escalated when Germany invaded the Soviet Union and the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The Axis forces fought and won huge naval, air, and land battles across Asia, Europe, North Africa, and in the Pacific before the tide turned on them in 1943.

The war ended in Europe with Allied forces capturing Berlin in May 1945, causing Adolph Hitler to commit suicide in a bunker under the city. The war continued in Asia for a short period before the Japanese surrendered later in the year.
