The Mystique of the Chinese Zodiac
The Chinese Zodiac Calendar
The 2,000 year old calendar of the Chinese Zodiac has been a reference in many Asian countries, as well as around the world. The calendar classifies each year as a Chinese animal sign, based on a 12-year cycle. Each animal sign predicts certain characteristics and fortunes for those born within its years. Note: The Chinese calendar does not correspond exactly to the Western (Gregorian) calendar, but we have used Western calendar years for convenience. Legend has it that Buddha invited the animals of the calendar to run a race. The order they finished would be the order they appeared on the calendar. The rat won, putting him first. The other zodiac signs include:
Rat
Ox
Tiger
Rabbit
Dragon
Snake
Horse
Sheep
Monkey
Rooster
Dog
Pig
The Chinese Zodiac folklore is a complicated one, mixing the qualities of these animals with the five elements, as well as secret animals and astronomical events. Click through this gallery to learn about what your birth year and Chinese Zodiac sign say about your fate!
